Exposure to heat and hot workplace environments results in multiple injuries and even deaths in different workplaces every year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported nearly 2,000 injuries and illnesses related to overheating prevented workers from doing their jobs in 2020. In an attempt to combat this growing concern, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) put together a Beat the Heat contest. Let’s learn about the Beat the Heat contest launched by OSHA and how it can benefit workers and companies around the country.
What Is the Beat the Heat Contest?
The main purpose of OSHA’s Beat the Heat contest is to raise awareness and come up with solutions for overheating in the workplace. The contest invites stockholders to submit presentations, tools, proposed plans, or other examples of ways that companies can inform workers of the dangers of overheating and how to prevent accidents.
OSHA’s initial announcement stated the contest’s purpose was to “raise industry and general public awareness of the dangers excessive heat presents to workers and motivate employers and workers to act to prevent heat illness.”
How Judging Works
Judging will be performed by OSHA employees and other federal agency workers in relevant fields. The Beat the Heat contest will not have a singular winner but will focus on a variety of categories:
- Innovation
- Creativity
- Strength of message
- Best non-English language entry
- Indoor heat emphasis
- Young worker emphasis
The goal is to analyze how different entries identify heat as a risk to workers, how well they convey their message, and how they engage employees, shareholders, and people who can make real changes.
Prizes for the Winners
OSHA will display winning submissions on their website and receive written pieces in their newsletters, The Heat Source and QuickTakes. Winners will receive a letter from Doug Parker, the Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health, and a congratulatory certificate.
Entrants will have until June 9, 2023 to turn in their submissions, and judging will begin shortly after.
